Custodian/Repair Generalist

The Belleville Police Service is accepting applications for the position of full-time Custodian/Repair Generalist.

Hours of work are 40-hours per week, Monday through Friday, working 8-hour shifts or a 10-hour compressed work week. There will be the occasional need for overtime dependent on operational needs.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Perform duties in a manner that reflects the Service’s Vision, Mission Statement, and Motto.

2. Operate within the regulations, policies, and procedures established by the Community Safety and Policing Act, the Belleville Police Service Board, and the Chief of Police.

3. Inspect, identify and report deficiencies inside and outside of the BPS facility.

4. Clean the cells and search areas daily including sweep and mop floors, wash walls and perform bio-hazard clean-ups, as required.

5. Vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas of the building.

6. Clean and sanitize washrooms and shower areas.

7. Mop floor areas of the building.

8. Clean glass doors at public and staff entrances.

9. Clean office areas and dust furniture.

10. Gather refuse and recyclable material for disposal and / or recycling.

11. Maintain inventory of supplies, including paper towel, toilet tissue, hand soap and other cleaning products.

12. Perform minor furniture and building repairs.

13. Perform painting, cleaning, repairing, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, maintenance and renovation duties as required and approved.

14. Perform semi-annual inspection of fire extinguishers and assist with the annual inspection of all fire equipment, if and when required.

15. Move supplies, furniture and equipment.

16. Set up and dismantle tables / chairs for meetings and other functions.

17. Sweep approaches to cell area, garages, staff and public entrances.

18. Clear snow from sidewalks, building entrances, around vehicles, and salt, when required.

19. Perform grounds keeping of lawn and flower beds (mow, trim and weed control), and other exterior building maintenance.

20. Deliver photocopy paper to all photocopy areas.

21. Assist with shredding of confidential files and documents in a secure manner.

22. Perform the function of a receiving department when purchases are delivered, distribute deliveries to proper departments and sign delivery slips, if required.

23. Prepare shipments for courier / transport pick-up, including bio-hazardous material.

24. Assist the Property Clerk(s) with the relocation and transportation of police auction items.

25. Clean and wash the interior and exterior of police vehicles, including bio-hazard clean-ups, as required.

26. Report any noticeable damage to police vehicles.

27. Assist with delivery and pick-up of police vehicles for repairs.

28. Perform other duties as required, assigned or directed by the Chief of Police or designate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Certifications Required:

-Must possess a high-school diploma or equivalent.

-One (1) to two (2) years’ experience in custodial and / or repair generalist roles.

-Possess a valid Class G driver’s license, at minimum and suitable driving record.

Preferred:

-Previous completion of Lockout Tagout Training an asset (if the member does not have this training they will be required to successfully complete training).

-Previous completion of Working at Heights Certification an asset (if the member does not have this training they will be required to successfully complete training).

Required:

– Demonstrated experience in custodial / repair generalist roles with knowledge of cleaning equipment, products, procedures, techniques and standards.

-Demonstrated experience utilizing small hand and power tools.

-Ability to utilize cleaning products and equipment.

-Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a team with a results driven approach.

-Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

-Strong attention to detail.

-Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

-Good customer service skills.

-Good observation skills and ability to identify areas in need of attention.

-Superior interpersonal and communication skills.

-Strong problem-solving and prioritization skills.

-Proven ability to work long hours and perform physical tasks including walking, standing, moving, lifting, climbing stairs, twisting, bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, etc.

-Ability to utilize a smartphone.

-Willingness to learn new technology and use of new equipment
