Position: Downtown Student Labourer

Division: Outdoor Operations
Reports to: Manager of Outdoor Operations, Supervisor of Parks and Open Space

Purpose and Scope:

Reporting directly to the Supervisor of Parks and Open Space, the Downtown Student Labourer will provide seasonal gardening and beautification throughout the downtown core.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position will:

  • Water, fertilize, weed and maintain the hanging baskets and floral planters in the downtown core.
    weep sidewalks and walkways.
  • Maintain municipal landscaped areas. Tasks include planting, edging, weeding, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, and using handheld power tools.
  • General maintenance of the downtown core as assigned, such as painting, etc.
  • Assist with special events such as set up and tear down i.e. moving tables, chairs, stages, etc.
  • Answer all public inquiries and provide assistance such as directions.
  • Act as an ambassador of the downtown area and the City of Quinte West.
  • Be responsible for general grounds keeping duties as required.
  • Collect and dispose of all litter, debris and recycling items (including items like cigarette waste).
  • Operate push lawnmower, power weed eater, and power tools, and understand/apply standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with department objectives.

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

The position will require:

  • Registration in a full time Post Secondary School Program and be returning in the Fall.
  • Ability to lift up to 18 kg/40 lbs.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, business owners and staff.
  • Valid Class G or G2 Driver’s Licence and a safe driving record in good standing, satisfactory to the employer.
  • Available for evening shift, weekend shifts, and statutory holidays for most positions.
  • Attention to great detail and the ability to perform repetitive work accurately.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to commit to working long hours in all weather conditions.

It would be nice to have:

  • Experience operating heavy duty pickup trucks (e.g., 2500 series or similar) for towing or hauling equipment.
  • Previous experience with gardening and cleaning duties, horticulture, painting, etc.
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, AED and WHMIS certificates.
  • Ability to verbally communicate in French or another language.
