Job Summary

The Custodian reports to the Facilities Supervisor and is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and well-functioning environment with the Stan Klemencic Care Centre.  This includes housekeeping duties and general facility maintenance to support the comfort and well-being of residents, families, staff and volunteers.

Custodian roles are offered as part-time and casual positions, primarily supporting weekend coverage and providing coverage for routine custodial functions during periods of Facilities staff absence, in accordance with the scope of the role and the collective agreement.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to learning and adhering to standards appropriate to a healthcare environment, including infection prevention and control practices (IPAC). The successful candidate is adaptable, detail-oriented and able to respond to the evolving needs of the facility.

The role requires flexibility, as the Custodian may be called in to provide support on short notice and may be asked to support various areas of the building to ensure optimal operations and a high standard of care.

This is a bargaining unit position.

A clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required as a condition of employment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness of residents’ rooms, common areas, and administrative spaces in accordance with healthcare standards
  • Adhere to all Infection Prevention and Control Practices (IPAC) policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning protocols and isolation procedures to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Deep cleaning of rooms (terminal cleans) as required and after maintenance repairs.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks as assigned and report deficiencies requiring external services.
  • Adhere to the daily, weekly, monthly preventative maintenance checklists as directed.
  • Ensure safe and effective use of cleaning equipment and tools
  • Open communication with Facilities Supervisor, Operations Manager or Manager on Duty to report hazards, challenges or issues.
  • Follow regulations as they pertain to housekeeping in a healthcare environment.
  • Transfer supplies in a timely fashion (i.e., paper products).
  • Safe effective use of equipment.
  • Physical upkeep of the grounds. Services for winter maintenance will be contracted out.  Auto mowers and an irrigation system will maintain the lawns in the summer.  Some light lawn maintenance and snow shoveling/salting may be required.
  • Adhere to and comply with all safety regulations when handling hazardous materials according to MSDS.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Management.
  • Collaborate respectfully with staff, volunteers, and external service providers
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of resident, family, client and organizational information
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all organizational health and safety policies

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Successful completion Grade 12 High School graduate.

Experience

  • 1-3 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in a healthcare/long-term care environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including the ability to carry out significant amounts of lifting and bending.
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Reach above shoulder heights, below waist or lift as required to complete the job responsibilities.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Must be able to lift raising objects from lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This requirement occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Able to work on ladders.
  • Must be able to balance, climb, crouch, grasp, kneel, push, reach, stand and stoop adequately to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to hear, smell, feel and speak adequately to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Have reliable transportation to the Hospice Quinte Care Centre (1244 Old Highway 2, Belleville – across from Bayside Secondary School).

 

Pay Band and Hours

This position is in pay band 2 – $21.24- $25.56 / hour, depending on experience  

This position is a part-time primarily weekend position with a total of eight (8) hours per week with the opportunity for additional on-call hours to cover absences.
