The City of Quinte West invites applications for the following summer student position:

Student Labourer 

Public Works and Environmental Services

The Student Labourer is responsible for completing tasks regarding the maintenance for all City parks, sports fields, open space areas, facilities and for the maintenance of parks vehicles and all park and facility related equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The position will:

 

Winter maintenance duties including snow clearing, sanding and salting of facilities, sidewalks, trails, parking lots.
Perform general maintenance, repair and inspection of equipment in Parks and Open Spaces, as assigned, but not limited to such duties as turf and grounds maintenance of sports fields, parkland to include fertilizing, seeding, lining, field setup and general grounds keeping, special-event set up and clean up, trails, facility maintenance, trees, hedges, gardens, signs, watering and irrigation systems, boat launches and docks.
Playground and splash pad maintenance and sanitation.
Assist the Supervisor and Foreperson in providing occasional guidance and training to crew members (summer students).
Keep accurate and detailed digital and written records management documentation.
Operate equipment such as mowers, as well as hand and power tools associated with general carpentry, various tractors, and attachments, debris removal and tree cutting and pruning equipment.
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, facility users, staff, suppliers and contract services.
Perform daily/weekly safety checklist in accordance with the health and safety regulations and city policies.
Assist other parks staff with duties assigned by the Parks Foreperson.
Ensure proper collection and disposal of garbage/recycling in accordance with department procedures.
Assist with contractors, including but not limited to, canteen staff, marina staff and other contractors working with the City.
Attend and be an active participant in staff meetings as required.
Attend annual performance appraisals and related training and development.
Respond positively and effectively to all park and facility user inquiries and concerns.
Complete any other duties that may be required from time to time.
Demonstrate the value of service, collaboration and care when performing work.
Demonstrate a commitment to learning and overall professional development.

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

The position will require:

A minimum of a Grade 12 education or equivalent.
A Class G driver’s licence and a safe driving record in good standing, satisfactory to the employer.
Ability to operate equipment such as a mower, truck and trailer.
Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Ability to work as team member of a “service delivery department”.
Knowledge of turf/sports field maintenance, special event set up and clean up, parks maintenance, parks furniture/equipment inspection, and/or other parks and facility operations.

Nice to have:

A valid Class DZ driver’s licence.
The ability to communicate in both English and French.
 

Work Experience:

A minimum of one (1) year of previous work experience with related work.
Demonstrated interpersonal and team skills.
Experience in parks, parks maintenance, or construction, horticulture, playground construction and maintenance.

Remuneration: 2024 Student and Part-Time Wages Level 1 – $17.70/hr to $18.45/hr
