The Facility Manager is an integral part of the management team, playing the key leadership role for daily operation, annual maintenance and long-term health of all physical assets on site year round at Camp Can-Aqua. This position is the key site contact for the ongoing site renewal projects.

This position requires a highly motivated, self-starting individual that has a combination of hands-on working knowledge of facility repair and the ability to keep focused on the longer-term priorities of managing a large asset. 

In addition, the Facility Manager is responsible for the management and supervision of maintenance staff and cleaning staff; development and implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program and implementation of the refurbishment and capital projects.

As the caretaker of the property, the Facility Manager is responsible to ensure site is maintained, landscaped, cared for and secure.

Responsibilities

Responsible for leading seasonal maintenance and cleaning staff, including preparation of schedules. Ensures the cleanliness, landscaping, annual projects and program support remain the focus of the seasonal maintenance staff daily routine.  This includes staff development through feedback.

Oversees the Water Treatment Plant operations with a minimum certification of Small Drinking Water Systems Operator (to be completed after work starts).

Takes a lead on the Maple Syrup operations at Can-Aqua, overseeing production, forest management, sales and inventory of all supplier relationships.

Establishes and executes a full property and landscape plan for the camp, with use of gardens, stone work and lawn care.

Expands and maintains the Annual Preventative Maintenance Program. This includes a comprehensive season start-up and shut-down, and ensures that year-round access is maintained for site safety and emergency vehicle access. Ensures site security of the camp property and its assets.

Manages and maintains the owned and rented vehicle and boat fleet. Understands and adheres to Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration requirements for vehicles. 

This position works closely with the Executive Director to proactively maintain strong relationships within the local community and uses best efforts to employ local members and trades from the local area.

Responsible for, preparing and oversight of all work weekends, as well as the organization of other volunteer work events for alumni and friends at and for Can-Aqua throughout the year. 

Directs and co-ordinates all relevant trades for repairs and maintenance performed on equipment, building systems, refurbishment and capital projects, as required. Monitors contract services to ensure quality standards are met and contract compliance.  As part of this work, ensures that all work meets applicable building code, is done with properly insured businesses, following all health and safety requirements.

In partnership with the Executive Director, implements the Can-Aqua facility refurbishment program, ensuring all work is consistent with the image and style found at Camp Can-Aqua. Establishes organization around all tools and equipment, implementing inventory controls on tools, supplies, and stock of daily use items and consumables.

In partnership with the Executive director, prioritizes capital projects, at times assuming the role of project manager; monitors budget for capital projects.

Supports program initiatives in the spring, fall and winter as needed.  

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary Education is an asset
  • 5 years related experience in skilled trades and/or building maintenance, and basic skills in:
    • Electrical/Plumbing
    • Carpentry/Construction
    • Property Management
  • Previous experience in a supervisory position and in achievement of administrative tasks
  • Knowledge, interest and/or experience in ensuring compliance with related building codes and legislation
  • Proven success working within a summer camp environment
  • Excellent leadership skills, results oriented, driven by initiative
  • WHMIS Workplace Safety Core Training
  • Minimum Small Drinking Water System Operator certificate for distribution and water treatment (will be provided to successful candidate)
  • Solid computer skills, comfortable working with Outlook, Explorer, & Excel
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with campers, staff and volunteers
  • Commitment to respecting diversity and demonstrating inclusive behaviour, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of colleagues and members, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR
  • All staff working at Camp Can-Aqua must provide clear criminal and background checks.
